Lifestyle of the Future – Part 2

For decades I have heard people say, well, more like a complaint, something like;

I wish I could work anywhere and still earn the same money I worked in an office

I wish I did not have to work too much. I wish I had more time for myself, time to relax and have some fun

My holiday goes so fast. I wish my office was by the beach. I wish I woke up to this amazing view everyday”

They go on and on about “I wish” without realising that these days they do not have to wish anymore. All those opportunities have come true and it is right here in Koh Phangan. To be exact, the dream lifestyle people have wished for has been existing among a group of people called Digital Nomads and Remote workers for years, and in Thailand itself by foreigners who find themselves a home here and get settled. For these guys, this lifestyle is not new for the rest of us. This is the Lifestyle of the Future.

Overcoming a fear of the unknown, being outside your comfort zone is never easy. We all want physical, mental and financial safety but sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and just go on with your life. I called it the moment of “break-free”!!!

If nothing changes, nothing changes” & “Just do it scared” – I have tattooed these 2 sayings in my head ever since.

  • Have I magically overcome all at once? Definitely not!
  • Am I fearless now? Absolutely not!
  • Am I still thinking in the back of my head about “what if” I was wrong to leave Bangkok? Yes!
  • Have I been tempted to go back to a so-called comfortable life I had in Bangkok? Yes!
  • Are my close friends and family still trying to talk me into going back to where they think I belong? Yes but luckily they are very supportive in whatever I decide to do, meaning they are not strongly against my decision, just not fully understanding my decision yet.

I can live with those questions popping up in my head every now and then because once I got to this island, I knew I was at the right place; a place of unlimited resources and full of opportunities to fulfil my life in all terms; skill development tools, career advancement; specifically location independent kind of careers, the right kind of surroundings; like-minded people, a safe and supportive environment and pure nature, organic nutrition, freedom of movement, work/life balance, and a chance to be a part of variety of communities that will motivate you to be a better version of yourself as a human being physically and mentally for you and for the world.

Super Easy to access

Let’s say you are coming here from Bangkok, well it doesn’t really matter where you are coming from because there are plenty of options of both public and private transportations for you to choose from.

There are 2 mainlands to get to first – Suratthani and NakornSrithammarat. You can reach these 2 provinces by your own car, bus, train or plane.

The next step is to make your way to Don Sak pier or Baan Don pier, Surat Thani. Then you hop on either the speed boat or ferry to ThongSala pier, Koh Phangan. If you prefer coming here with your car, you can also hop your car on the ferry from DonSak pier, and in about 3-4 hours, you are here in Koh Phangan.

Each transportation choice contains different prices though. Prices are different for each individual. The most convenient, expensive and fastest is a plane ride directly to Koh Samui by Bangkok Airway, then hop on a speed boat from Nathon Pier to ThongSala pier which takes less than one hour and you are already here. It is however the most expensive.

I chose to come here the fastest way – hopping on the plane from Bangkok to Koh Samui within one hour, then speed boat and here I am – Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

After speaking with so many people who come here either as a visitor or resident, mainly digital nomads and remote workers, they shared with me the similar thoughts that the journey to this enchanted island, whether it took 2 hours or up to 12 hours, no workflow is interrupted.

For some who preferred the fastest way like me, a couple of hours voyaging was a time to rest their eyes. Once I opened them, I arrived in the place with the fiber optic internet everywhere – one of the key reasons why the most digital nomads and remote workers choose to be here.

For those who do not mind a long (er) journey for whatever reasons, they unanimously mentioned that it was the time to unplug and disconnect themselves from the world in general; the time given to themselves alone to reconnect, revitalize, restore, revive and recover, or even recreate. It is no secret that productivity and creativity originate and are nurtured when we are in stress free mode.

Each individual found inspiration on the way here and found more when being here. I myself, for example, finished my novel of 40,000-ish words in one week, when in Bangkok it would have taken me at least 2 weeks. It might be because of the magically secret power of the stones – who knows!

I do not consider myself a Digital Nomad, or a Remote Worker but a Freelancer who mostly produces her projects online. I am a location independent and have the freedom of movement as long as there is a Fiber optic internet. Could I find all these in Bangkok? Most definitely! but why move here then? Let’s discuss the facts first.

To be fair to Bangkok, Koh Phangan lacks other things Bangkok offers such as the international fast food companies like McDonald’s, Burger Kings, Starbucks, Subway, including big shopping malls and movie theatres. If these are what you need, the island might not be the best choice as a place to settle.

In terms of education, Bangkok definitely has more choices of international and local schools, whereas Koh Phangan has just a couple of them.

In terms of medical care, Koh Phangan is no way near Bangkok when it comes to the amounts but enough to take care of general cases. However, for serious medical cases, they will be more likely transferred to Koh Samui as they have got better medical equipment and professionals.

What Bangkok and Koh Phangan have in common though are 7/11, Family mart, Big C, Tesco Lotus and Macro, including clubs and bars obviously.

At this point, I would say it is based on an individual’s needs, what you hold valuable and consider important for you at this point of your life. Mine is here in Koh Phangan with local food markets, restaurants and shops, including authentic retreat and wellness centers and other kinds of physical and mental health related communities – not to mention no traffic jam, nor air pollution. I am in search of authenticity. No other place can offer as much as Koh Phangan.

For those who aren’t familiar with the terms, here is the explanation of what I mean when I say La Casa Tropicana is Coworking and Coliving Space.

Coworking space is a workplace where everyone shares the same work area and environment which basically looks like a working community.

Coliving space is applied with a similar concept which is a place where each resident gets a private bedroom with shared common areas. Nowadays these types of accommodation are more and more popular amongst students, individuals relocating, digital nomads and remote workers, not only in the big cities but remote areas surrounded by nature like in Koh Phangan.

La Casa Tropicana offers a place to WORK and LIVE, along with making sure that whenever you are hungry and thirsty, you will be fed properly with healthy food and drink. Thus, they have got you covered in all aspects.

They got a second property called Sunset Hill Resort which combines all those things also but inside a 4-star resort with the terrace that offers a unique panoramic sea view with spectacular sunsets. The infinity swimming pool, a fine dining restaurant, a sauna and ice bath round out the amazing offering they provide their guests.

What I can’t ever find if still in Bangkok is to literally live and work by the beach every single day, among these super talented & like-minded people from all over the world in one place, where shared information and ideas are flooding left and right under the similar purpose of creating something better for themselves personally and professionally, and to give back to mother nature and the locals.

This place offers a safe and supportive environment where I, as a solo female traveller, could feel it the moment I checked in (that’s why I never check-out). No one is here to judge you in any ways but to share the knowledge, thoughts and ideas, to build the connection from personal to professional, to create a network and at the end THE community everyone can rely on, THE network of life-long friends.

Speaking of their gourmet restaurants, they serve healthy food and drink. They do serve alcohol so don’t you worry – this place knows when to let loose and enjoy the moment. Whether you are on Paleo, Vegan, Keto, Marco counting, Calorie deficit or just a general eater, they have got it all. The ingredients are hand-picked daily, raw and fresh from the local markets. The chefs are also the locals who understand the secret of cooking which is the extra love they add onto each meal they cook.

Don’t ever forget their “coffee” – Top grade coffee grown and nurtured by the local, roasted by the one and only Bubbas Coffee Phangan . If you come to Phangan and have not got a sip of our coffee, you have not arrived to Koh Phangan (That’s what they all say over here ^_-)

Lastly and probably the most important thing, at least for me and I believe for most people, is to have a Work/Life Balance lifestyle which, I believe, is a key to Lifestyle for the future. Getting to live and work surrounded by nature and like-minded people has raised my productivity and creativity to the next level(s). I literally work faster and better and trust me when I say I am not the only one who experiences this. Not to mention other opportunities I have got offered since day 1 to be a part of this fast growing community.

I like to think that this place has some sort of magical spells that can somehow unlock your hidden talents, capacities & abilities, to open up more doors of opportunities, and to allow you to be the person you are meant to be.

To sum up, It allows me to BE, LIVE, BREATHE, THINK freely with no limitation and no boundaries in this safe and supportive environment.
